Board Trainer
Do I need a degree – and if so, in what – if I want to be a dog trainer &/or own a daycare or boarding kennel?
I recently had change of heart but I don’t know if you have to have a degree to become a dog trainer or own your own doggie daycare or boarding kennel. Can someone help me out or evne refer me to a few websites that will give me some info….??

If you want to start a daycare/boarding kennel, you should…
- have a lawyer. Dog fights happen. People fights happen. These are all very serious issues that doggy daycare owners must Work Out in advance. Which dogs will you allow into your day care? How will you screen them?
- apply for a business permit and get all the legalities worked out.
- have a more than basic knowledge of dog behavior. If you run a day care, you MUST be able to read dog body language to step in before fights happen.
- remember that anything with a mouth can bite, especially frightened dogs. You must have all your liability issues covered
- safety first. You must have a way to decrease your chances of spreading diseases in your facility
…This is just the very bare bones logistics. Once you’re done with this, then you can add on the bells and whistles and snack times and training sessions and all that jazz.
To become a dog trainer, you should…
- always attend seminars, lectures, etc. on a regular basis. You will always be learning new methods and new techniques and new training philosophies
- become an apprentice. NO amount of reading or listening will EVER prepare you for the harsh realities of dog training unless you have hands-on experience.
- follow your trainer and begin a clientel of your own (this will jump start your business)
- again, settle out your liability issues with your lawyer
- have proof of your experience/credibility – best way to do this is to train your own dogs and compete with them. The most highly sought after trainers I know have various titles on their dogs and usually have attended a sort of “trainer’s university” like SF SPCA’s Academy:
