Majority of plays in football are very short in duration. Some even less than 10 seconds). The system you are looking at for energy conrtibution is the phosphocreatine system. It is the responsible source of energy for the first 20 seconds of ANY activity. The reason for this is because the phosphocreatine system requires the breaking of a single bond to get at the availbale ATP ( ATP-PCr —> ATP + PCr) where as glycolysis (which is the next quickest system) requires not only the splitting of a glucose molecule but also some redox reactions to get ATP out of it.
